Downspouts – you know, the tubes that run down the side of our houses that we rarely notice, are connected to the local sewer system. During heavy rainfall, if the downspout is connected, the sewers become overloaded, increasing the risk of basement flooding and releasing polluted rainwater into our local waterways.
In an effort to control this, the City of Toronto has made downspout disconnection a city bylaw:

The bad news? Some of you have work to do before the deadline.
The good news? For 3/4’s of Toronto homes, this can be done without having to call in additional help. All you need are a few supplies and a little patience.
