There comes a point in everyone’s life where they must consider downsizing their property. This can be a very difficult decision as we can all become attached to the family home – this is where your children reached their milestones, the neighbourhood is familiar and comfortable, you have loads of storage space and most of all you love your home!
So why downsize you ask?
- The kids have moved out; now there’s too much space, which leads to extra upkeep.
- Energy efficiency – now you’re heating and cooling rooms that aren’t used much.
- Stairs – as we get older, this can become a challenge, so downsizing to one floor seems to be the best bet.
- Retirement savings – maybe you want to have more money at your disposal to go on trips
- Financial reasons – job loss, loss of significant other etc.
Whatever the reason, letting go can be hard. Here are some tips to help you make the transition:
- Start with the rooms in your home you don’t use on a daily basis. Packing them up first won’t make you feel so overwhelmed. Start with small time increments, perhaps a half hour a day.
- If you have items to leave to your children, considering giving them now. It will save you space, and you’ll get the added enjoyment of seeing your children use these items while you’re still around.
- Make a donation! If you have items that you don’t need and don’t want to give to your children, why not give them to a local charity? It will be much appreciated and you’ll feel great.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Have the kids over to go through the old photo albums and toys.
Moving is a great opportunity to start a new phase of your life – and that can be exciting!
