There never seems to be a shortage of cranes in the backdrop of our beautiful city. For the most part it is assumed that another glass and metal sky scraping tower is being hoisted up. The following developments are evidence of the contrary. The most exciting real estate developments for the coming year are all masterfully blending old with the new.
7 St. Thomas
Set to be the first of it’s kind in Toronto, 7 St. Thomas will offer exclusive commercial ownership. Strategically located in the city’s leading commercial district of Bay-Bloor/Yorkville, this new luxury address will masterfully combine restored Victorian townhomes with a contemporary fitted glass tower.
Broadview Hotel
Will the redevelopment of the Broadview Hotel make Riverside an even more sought after neighbourhood than it already is? It sure seems like it. This hybrid hotel/restaurant project aims to do what the Gladstone and Drake did for West Queen West in the early 2000s. No matter what, the building that once housed Jilly’s is going to generate huge buzz when it re-opens.
The Canary District
Now that the Pan Am Games are over, we will start to see the Canary District rise and take flight. Set to open this spring, condo units that were once used as the Athletes Village will start occupancy, while the brand new YMCA and a host of retail are soon to follow.
FIVE Condos
The retail affiliated with this condo project at 5 St. Joseph Street is slowly opening, and boy does it bode well for the development as a whole. The heritage buildings at the base of the tower have been masterfully restored, and the soon-to-be-complete condo is a breath of fresh air for those bored with the city’s propensity to build basic glass boxes.
Globe and Mail Centre
Already starting to take shape on King East, you can clearly get a sense of the scale and the density the Globe and Mail Centre will bring to Corktown.
I’m sure many of us will welcome these developments that bring an air of creativity and freshness from the perceived “normal”.
