Container homes

Imagine it: After a hard day at the office you head out into the crazy traffic and fight your way to serenity… the place you can put your feet up… to your very own shipping container.

Wait… What??

Yes that’s right, a shipping container. Seems it’s becoming in style to live in a big metal box, and Canadian companies are leading the way. These containers are designed to be durable and affordable (as well as easily transportable), so they’re a perfect fit to house employees in remote areas such as the forestry and mining sector. However, the Vancouver Olympics opened up a door that had been previously closed – Residential housing.

Suddenly, Vancouver had to quickly and comfortably house thousands of people. In May, Big Steel Box Corp. (the designers of these steel homes and competitor of 3twenty Solutions Inc.), merged with Mission Group to produce high end housing.

They didn’t disappoint.

Each place is equipped with granite countertops and custom cabinetry throughout which locks into place for easy transportation. In addition, these units feature Belgian wallpaper, chrome bathroom fixtures and touch screen operated audio visual entertainment systems mounted in the walls. These amenities definitely change the vision of what we think when it comes to storage containers.

The recycling aspect is something to applaud as well. Not only is steel very durable during the changing weather conditions, but it’s also recycled material, and saves a few trees in the process.

With our growing population, could this be the future of housing?
