It sounds like something from a futuristic sci-fi movie…inflatable concrete homes. But with the help of new technology, the material needed to build these homes has arrived. These dome homes resemble something you would see in days gone by. And I’m really digging them!
The concrete Binishell dome homes are the creation of architect Nicolo Bini. The technique he uses is a little reminiscent of the paper mache projects you might have done in grade school. He starts from the ground level and slowly builds the layers of the walls, then adds a load of concrete to create the domes. With the help of an air bladder, this technique shapes the concrete. When the final form of the building is reached, the bladder is deflated and you are left with a dome home.
There are over 1,600 Binishells built across the globe, ranging from those 120 feet in diameter to tiny bungalows built in developing countries. Nicoló believes the structures can be implemented to different typologies: schools, military bases and stadiums. The construction costs start at $3,500 and the concrete mixes and rebar can be locally sourced.
